Paul spoke to the people of that time to help them see that Jesus came to save us through forgiveness of sins. No person, place, or action, such as circumcision, could provide for the gift of life that comes through Jesus.

It sounds like God‘s glorious, powerful presence could not be close to the level of sinfulness that the Israelites had sunk to especially after worshiping the golden calf. So it doesn’t sound like it’s so much that he was so angry that he would kill them. The requirements of reading themselves of jewelry and whatever else were like a cleansing process to make it possible for God‘s presence to be with them.
